Eibar has been a club with a long tradition of having Basque players in its squad. Before the Civil War, the best Eibar footballers such as Muguerza, Echevarría, Ciriaco Errasti, Albeniz, and others had as references teams from the First Division, especially Athletic and Alavés. In 1940, the Club that was initially called Eibar Football Club and is now S.D. Eibar had to be nourished necessarily by Eibar players and from the closest environment of Debabarrena, Debagoiena, and the Duranguesado. In the following years, the origin of the players was very similar to the initial one, the town of Eibar and its surroundings. The promotion to the Third Division did not change this situation much, and it was the five seasons in the Second Division, between 1953 and 1958, when this block of Eibar players, Elgoibar players, Deba players, etc. was joined by a very prominent group of Biscayan players and especially footballers loaned by Real Sociedad. The long journey in the Third Division between 1958 and 1976 meant that most of the squads were players from Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, a circumstance similar to the one experienced in Regional Preferente between 1976 and 1976, and which did not change in the two seasons in Segunda B and the following eighteen seasons in Segunda A. With the promotion to the First Division in 2014, Eibar changed its focus and began to have more foreign players. However, in the current 25-26 season, Eibar has returned to its origins and has a squad with more Basque players. Coach José Luis Mendilibar has been key to this change in strategy. Players like Arbilla and Riesgo have been fundamental in this process. Eibar has shown that it can compete in the Second Division with a squad with more Basque players. The Eibar fans are excited about this new approach and hope that the team will continue to grow. Eibar has found its identity and is ready to face the challenges of the 25-26 season. Eibar's squad is stronger than ever, thanks to the combination of Basque and foreign players. The team is ready to fight for promotion to the First Division.
